The United States Department of State (“DOS”) has temporarily expanded the ability of consular officers to waive in-person interviews for individuals applying for non-immigrant visas in the same visa classification. Previously, only those applicants whose non-immigrant visas had expired within the previous 12 months were eligible for an interview waiver.  Now, DOS has expanded this period to 24 months.

The policy change, which will be effective until December 31, 2020, will allow consular officers to continue processing certain non-immigrant visas while limiting the number of applicants appearing at a consular section reducing the risk of COVID-19 infection.
